One-year-olds are so much fun. These tiny toddlers are filled with so much energy, excitement, and wonder. They are great at finding something to do, but it’s not always something they are supposed to do. That’s where an exciting toddler activity comes in.
I love to give my one year old time to just explore and engage her imagination. Usually her activities consist of helping me do household tasks like helping me wash dishes, removing the laundry from the dryer, or sweeping the floor. (Toddlers love to help!) On occasion though, it is fun to have a simple activity to make the day even more exciting. Today, I want to share with you a simple craft activity that is entertaining and engaging for one year old toddlers.
Toddler Activity: Water Painting
Don’t worry, this activity doesn’t actually use paint. For this simple water painting activity, the water acts as the “paint.” This project is very simple, great fun, and easy to clean up. My one year old loves it, and I think yours will too.
Supplies
- Construction paper
- Paint brush
- Water
- Small cup or bowl (for the water)
Set Up
This toddler activity is quick and easy to set up. You’ll want to do this activity in a water-safe environment such as a kitchen or even outside. If your toddler has a high chair, that is a great option. The kitchen floor might work as a good location too. Remember, as with all toddler activities, supervision is required.
Lay out a piece of fun-colored construction paper. Add just a little bit of water to the cup or bowl. Do a quick demonstration for your toddler. Dip the paint brush into the water and “paint” it onto the paper. Your toddler will likely have no trouble grasping this activity. Hand your toddler the brush and let them “paint” a masterpiece.
This water painting toddler activity may turn out being a dump-the-water game. Just let them have fun, that is the whole point. Don’t worry about the mess because it’s just water and should take less than a minute to clean up.
If you really don’t want your toddler dumping the water, consider buying one of these Water Wow brushes that stores the water inside the brush. It doubles as another fun activity too.
When my toddler sees her painting, she points at it and says, “Dog!” I love that she can see a dog in her painting. If your toddler has begun talking, ask them what they painted just to see what they say.
I hope your toddler enjoys this activity as much as my daughter did. Let them make a mess and don’t forget to have fun!
