A postpartum care kit is what every mom needs after having a baby. Having a postpartum care kit can make life so much easier. If you are expecting, I highly recommend making yourself a postpartum care kit to keep in your bathroom. I made myself one before having my first child, and it was amazing. I was so thankful to have all the supplies I needed in one place.
If you are currently expecting, I highly recommend making a free Amazon baby registry. You can add the postpartum care kit items to your registry. Most (if not all of them) should qualify for the completion discount. You can then purchase all of these items at a discount before you give birth. (This is what I did.)
If you have a friend who is expecting, a postpartum care kit would make an amazing present. This postpartum care kit is a simple but effective supply kit for the postpartum period. You can make it as simple or fancy as you like.
Postpartum Kit Essentials:
Tucks (optional)
Dermoplast (optional)
Putting Together the Postpartum Kit
If you are giving this kit as a gift, you could also add some fun snacks to the gift basket. Also, a box with a lid is extra nice if you are gifting this postpartum kit.
Basket or Container
With my first child, I just used a basket I already had to store my supplies. It had a lid with it which is nice, especially if it’s a shared bathroom. My basket came from Ross. They typically have great prices on different styles of containers. These containers (I haven’t tried these) are similar to the basket pictured, but I highly recommend looking around locally for a container.
This time, I’m just using a simple open basket like in the pictures.
Peri Bottle
After giving birth, a peri bottle is great to be able to gently keep yourself clean. I recommend using lukewarm or slightly warm water. You want to be picky like Goldilocks, not too hot, not too cold, just right. This peri bottle has a telescopic nozzle which makes it a lot easier to use. This is the peri bottle I used.
Herbal Perineal Spray
This herbal perineal spray is soothing and has a cooling effect that relieves irritation. It’s wonderful to keep in your kit and use with each trip to the bathroom. I love this spray because all of the ingredients are recognizable and pronounceable.
Pads
You’ll probably want some extra absorbency pads for the first couple of weeks postpartum. The bleeding should lighten up after a couple of weeks, and you might be able to use thinner pads at that point. Some women use adult diapers postpartum (like these Always Discreet ones), but the expense of them kept me from trying them.
Inexpensive Underwear
I picked up some inexpensive, large underwear to use for postpartum in case anything got ruined (they didn’t). Something big and comfy should do the trick. These worked great for me.
Tucks
These are optional. I don’t know how much they actually helped with healing. But, a lot of people seem to really like them and recommend them, so I will include them here. Tucks are basically a witch hazel cooling pad, but they do have a lot of extra ingredients besides witch hazel. The second ingredient in the herbal perineal spray mentioned above is witch hazel, so it should do pretty much the same thing.
Dermoplast
Dermoplast is a numbing spray, which can be nice postpartum. However, I would consider Dermoplast optional as well because of two main reasons:
- Most hospitals give out Dermoplast, so you might be able to take the extra home with you.
- The herbal perineal spray I talked about before is sort of a natural take on Dermoplast.
However, Dermoplast is very effective at numbing and cooling. If you are really sore, it is very helpful at numbing things for a bit.
That’s all that I included in my postpartum kit. I just put everything in my box and put the box into the bathroom. It was all ready to go, and I was so thankful I had it postpartum.
Assembly
If you are making this kit for yourself, the assembly is as simple as unwrapping everything and putting it into your box.
If this kit is a gift, you could make it a bit prettier by adding tissue paper and ribbon. You might also want to add some filler paper for height. Or, you could just stick it all in the box and wrap the box. Also, you could add some snacks that your friend might enjoy, such as granola bars, mixed nuts, or maybe their favorite chocolate. Any snack that doesn’t require prep would work perfectly.
And there you have it. A simple, but extremely helpful postpartum kit to make the postpartum period just a little bit easier.
If you have given birth, what was your favorite product postpartum?
